How Long Will A Cake Last?

When purchasing a cake it’s important to understand how long it will last. Most people who buy things like christening cakes, baby cakes or birthday cakes, will typically place smaller orders and how long it lasts won’t matter as much, as they’ll likely eat the cake before it loses its freshness. However, wedding cakes are a different matter and as they are much larger cakes, people want to ensure they are made the most of and some couples like to keep a piece of the wedding cake or a layer of the cake as a memory of their special day. As cakes contain a lot of fresh ingredients, the time they last will vary depending on what has been used. Most cakes will be fresh for quite a while, however they will typically only remain moist for 3-5 after they have been cut into, after this the texture will start to dry out. One way to extend the lifespan of a cake is to pop it in the fridge, this helps to hold the moisture in the cake, preventing it from becoming dry and stale. But if your cake involves things like fresh cream or fruit, then it will likely only last for 1-2 days, without any form of storage. If you want to extend the lifespan of your cake, then your cake maker will be able to provide advice on how to store it correctly to keep it fresh.

Can A Cake Be Put In The Fridge or Freezer?

When it comes to cakes and fridges, the simple answer is yes. Just like most food items, cakes are susceptible to quality degradation when the temperature in a room changes, so any rooms that are humid or have direct sunlight, will likely dry out the cake. By placing the cake into a fridge, it will help to keep the moisture in both the sponge and icing. However, if you are planning on storing cake in a fridge, then it is best to cut the cake and place it into airtight containers first. This will keep the cake fresh, whilst also preserving the flavour and preventing contamination with other fridge foods. Freezers are a different matter however and it will depend on the type of cake you’re wanting to freeze. Some cakes such as banana cakes, chocolate cakes, carrot cakes actually taste better once they have been in the freezer and then thawed again. However, when it comes to sponge cakes, they can be frozen usually for a period of up to 3 months, this can be either sliced or as a whole cake. Cakes can be frozen for longer than 3 months, however after this period they will start to suffer from freezer burn and whilst they will still be edible, the quality in the taste will significantly drop.
