What is Cake Fondant?

Fondant is basically a type of icing, the word fondant originates from the French word la fusion translated it means melting. Be careful not to confuse fondant and fondue although they have the same meaning in French. I'm sure melted cheese on their cake would be a shock, so let’s just stick to fondant. Fondant is in a league of its own when it comes to icing. You will usually find the texture to be somewhat different and comes in different forms poured and rolled.

Rolled fondant is the one commonly used by most, we usually explain it as clay like mostly used to cover or add decoration to cakes. Poured takes a more liquid form and is less common, think of the inside of a cadburys cream egg well that’s filled with the stuff.

What's Fondant Made From?

Rolled fondant is basically made from sugar, water and corn syrup if you want to use it for sculpting or shaping a touch or gelatine or glycerin can be added. When you think of icing you may automatically think of something light and creamy, easy to spread and licking the bowl afterwards (if you know you know). Poured fondant is basically made from concentrated sugar syrup, it’s left to cool, needed well causing the sugar to become re crystallised creating a heavy dough like texture.

Can You Eat Fondant?

Like any other ingredient, fondant is 100% edible and safe; it's not made from anything that can cause someone to feel unwell unless they are of course allergic to any. If you see someone removing fondant it’s probably because the don’t like the taste (flavour) or simply don’t like the texture.

Why Use Fondant?

Over the years fondant has become increasingly popular, leaving marzipan and royal icing a little behind in the popularity contest. Fondant is popular because it’s versatile to work with, it’s used to seal cakes and you find it keeps them fresher for longer. If you’re using fondant for decoration then the opportunities are unlimited. The Cake Rooms hopes you enjoyed this short blog. If you're feeling creative and are thinking about taking up a new hobby, try making your own fondant. It's fun and your new found skills could come in handy in the future..
