Keeping Your Wedding Cake Alive in the Hot Weather

Wedding Cakes in the Summer

Summer is here and the weather is getting hot, choosing to have your wedding reception outside is an excellent idea after all the sunshine makes everyone a little happier. Great choice perfect scenery and lighting for your photographs throughout the day BUT yes there is always a but you're going to have to treat your wedding cake with caution and take extra steps to keep it looking beautiful in the hot weather.

Filling & Icing

By now you will have already decided your wedding reception will be held outside, cake is like everything else some are stronger than others it all depends on the icing and filling you choose. What would be more disappointing than watching your cake turn into a big sweaty mess on the day especially after paying hundreds.

Fondant is always a big hit during the summer months simply because once it’s set it stays, but keep in mind it can sweat in extreme heat. You could also opt for butter cream but you would have to ask your cake maker to substitute a few of the ingredients such as swapping real butter for vegetable shortening this will definitely extend your cakes lifespan. Butter and dairy based cakes and toppings are usually a no go when it comes to summer weddings whipped cream, marzipan and cheesecake are a definite no go. If they are used then the cake should be kept refrigerated when not on display and in a shaded area when on display.

Wedding Cake Flowers

Everyone and I mean everyone loves a cake decorated with beautiful flowers. They make a huge statement and look amazing. Make sure you choose flowers that are going to last throughout the whole day and night. The last thing you want is a beautiful cake with wilting flowers.

If you’re looking for something to withstand the heat and full event orchids , roses , Lilly’s and Delilah’s are all amazing choices. If you have the budget then tropical flowers such as Annuals, Perennials, and Biennials are amazing. They blossom in their natural environment.

AVOID Hydrangeas, lilies of the valley, stephanotis, tulips, and lilacs at all costs; they are sensitive to heat and will not withstand the day.

Cake Transportation

If your cake is not being transported by a professional you must make sure the air con and ventilation is turned on at least 10 minutes before loading your cake into the car. Be aware that the boot of your car doesn’t have good ventilation or air con so transport your cake in the passenger seat or the back seat. Keep your cake in a cooler if you can find one large enough or at very least a cake box for extra protection. The hot sun can be damaging.

Always check with the venue hosting your reception for a refrigerator or a well ventilated room with strong air con so you can store your cake there for as long as possible.
