What is a Traditional Christmas Cake?
A christmas cake in the UK can vary depending on the part of the country you are in. In England, a Christmas cake is a type of cake that was historically just a plum porridge. However, this then developed into what are moist zante currants, sultanas and raisins, which have been soaked in brandy, rum, sherry or whisky. The cake is then typically covered in layers of marzipan, then icing and this is then decorated with a plaid ribbon and holly on top. However, many Christmas cakes now use more modern decorations such as snowmen, trees or Father Christmas.
In Scotland, however, they have something much more specialised, and their Christmas cake is the “Whisky Dundee”. This cake is much more light and crumbly and is more like the fruit and includes things such as candied peel and cherries. In addition to this, they also have the Scottish black bun. No matter what type of Christmas cake you might like, the most important thing is that it’s something to bring the family together to enjoy at Christmas. Keep reading below to find out more about how you serve Christmas cake and the different options you can now choose for Christmas cake, if fruit cake isn’t your thing.
How Do You Serve Christmas Cake?
When it comes to servicing Christmas cake, you can cut it as you would any other type of cake and cut it into pieces that work for you. Historically, Christmas cakes were served alongside coins to bring good luck to the person receiving the slice of cake. Each region also has their own delicacies for Christmas cakes and in places such as Yorkshire, it’s not uncommon for fruit cake or Christmas fruit cake to be served and eaten with cheese such as Wensleydale.

Does A Christmas Cake Have To Be A Fruit Cake?
No. In recent years, tastes have changed and the fruitcake isn’t as popular as it once was. Many people opt for things such as Christmas pudding (this can also be a hit and miss choice) whilst others now serve a Yule Log. A Yule Log or Chocolate loss is essentially a chocolate swiss roll, that is then covered in chocolate and decorated to resemble the appearance of a log. But these aren’t your only options either, some people prefer what looks like a classic Christmas cake but with a sponge filling instead. Sponge cakes have easily become one of the most popular types of cake options in the UK in recent years.
